Ephemeral Arts Connection 2010
Ephemeral Arts Connection 2010 Marsala "Monumento ai Mille"
From the 9th to the 20th of September 2010 artists from everywhere met in Sicily (Marsala) for the international workshop Ephemeral Arts Connection. Exponents of different disciplines have been working together to realize an installation and a performance inside the Monumento ai Mille in Marsala the evening f the 19th of September. If Giarre was defined by Incompiuto Siciliano as the capital of the Sicilian (and Italian) Incompletion for the number of the unfinished buildings, Marsala is its capital for the importance of one these incomplete works: the Monumento ai Mille. “No more 1000 â€" The landing of Garibaldi in Marsala: history of a monument never born, of a denied memory†is the title of the book of Giacomo Di Girolamo, Antonella Genna and Francesco Timo where is told through different kind of testimony, the history of this “interrupted†monument. In the 150 year from its unity Italy hasn’t been able to realize a monument to itself in the place where its unity has began. The product of the good intentions of somebody and the negligence of others is this space without a function. Probably Italy never wanted this monument. (And we are obliged to reflect about the idea of unity. In a moment in which the United Europe is the main political, social and economic context, Italy doesn’t have still its monument). For somebody to be united is necessary to solve the international economic crisis, for others the Euro has been just a chance to do new business, and for others the unity is needed to face a common problem of the planet inhabitants: the global warming. So which kind of unity we are talking about? In the Watermill Center (New York) of Robert Wilson we learned that when the artists from everywhere in the world and from every discipline come together to create, the cultural barrier are broken, the arts acquire a value superior to the simple entertainment and make us grow as human kind. This is the unity that we have been exploring during the Ephemeral Arts Connection. The architecture has an important role in this context. As Rem Koolhaas says, it can stop to be stupid for its congenital slowness and learn to transform and to adapt itself to the functional, conceptual or “representative†(like in this case) needs. Only when the architecture will assume to be “ephemeral†will become able to transform itself responding to the always different needs of the contemporary society. If the architecture is thought as temporary in the program, the typology and in the materials it can become, without regrets, something different and will be possible to control the origin of the materials used and their recycling when the building won’t be needed anymore. Thought as ephemeral architecture can finally go over its pretension of superiority on the “temporary†arts and learn from them, it can become more and more performative. With the project of the Casa 4 (where took place the laboratory of the workshop) we worked on this direction, reinterpreting in positive terms the phenomenon of the Incompletion, thinking to the non finito (unfinished) as an element that could be determinant for its renovation. “Unfinished, a picture remains alive, dangerous. A finished work is a dead work, killed†said Picasso. And the architecture can take advantage of this idea to grow and step up in Italy and in the rest of the planet. Thanks to the big success of this first edition we know that we will do every year in Marsala a new edition of the Ephemeral Arts Connection and we already announced that the next edition will happen in Syria in around six months. The idea is that every new edition faces a social issue through the arts and the international talent. We invite everyone who like the idea to join us in the Ephemeral.
